Toyota RAV4 Gas Mileage

First introduced in the mid-1990s, the Toyota RAV4 is one of the most popular small SUVs in America. An affordable price and good gas mileage have kept the RAV4 at the top of its class. A 2.0 liter four-cylinder was the sole engine choice through 2003, when the displacement was bumped up to 2.4 liters.

The 2008 Toyota RAV4 produces acceptable gas mileage figures for a small SUV, with highway ratings in the mid 20s. The current RAV4 is available with a 2.4 liter four-cylinder or a 3.5 liter six-cylinder engine in both 2WD and 4WD variations. All 2008 RAV4s are equipped with automatic transmission (a manual gearbox was last offered in 2005).

We spent a week with the RAV4 and came away with some interesting observations. Check out our Toyota RAV4 Review:

Note: the EPA tweaked their testing procedure, starting with the 2008 model year, with the end result being that the 2008 MPG estimates are now lower than previous years. As always, YMMV.

My 06 RAV4 was getting 27 mpg. Recently it has dropped to 25. I am not sure what has caused the decline. Any ideas?

@Zach – if you live in a colder climate, the winter weather could be the culprit … with longer warm up times and the like. You should also check your RAV4’s tire pressure (free!) and change its air filter ($15).

You might consider switching to a K&N air filter … K&N’s are more efficient and reusable … while cleaning is a small added hassle, you’ll save over the long run.

One last thing off the top of my head … have you recently switched your brand of gasoline? Switching to a brand with a higher blend of ethanol can negatively effect mileage.

I recently put gas in my car that had ethanol in it as well. I then saw that my maintenance required light came on- I was wondering if my car needs to get it all pumped out or if maybe my car was just over heating somehow? I had been driving for a few hours.. I have a 2007 rav4. Any info would be a huge help.

@Ashley – Although there’s a good chance the maintenance light came on by coincidence, it’s best not to take a chance.

Ethanol is everywhere these days, but the percentages vary. While 10% ethanol shouldn’t be a problem, 85% (E85) isn’t a good thing in an engine that’s not designed for it.

Best bet is to check the filling station and your owners manual to see what percentage of ethanol is approved and give your local Toyota dealer’s service department a call.

On Jan 7, 2010 I bought a 1995 Toyota RAV4 for $6,300. Tomorrow it will hit the 100,000 mile mark. I love it. When I stop at a red light sometimes I think that it is off as it so quiet. One time I actually thought it had stalled and turned the key to turn it back on. I get right around 30 miles a gallon hwy. I tell people it is a 2005, it looks, runs, and sounds so good. What do you all think? Great deal? How long do these autos last, 200,000 miles?

I had a 98 Rav 4..220k miles..it just died..timing belt wasnt replaced, i didnt do regular oil changes so the engine is gone. I bought it for 3k 2 years ago..Im sure If i wouldve taken better care of it it wouldve went another 50k miles!! Good car but VERY small..Hardly had room with my 2 girls in the back seat with their carseats..Awful on space and comfort.. I heard the new ones have more room.
