5. To above posters,

   Mileage postings here are probably based on the epa ratings of the day. In the 1980s to early ninties gas did not contain ethanol or was a lesser blend of ethanol, and contained more combustion energy. Ethanol actually contains oxygen which means ethanol blended gas actually produces less power per fluid ounce than its non-blended counterpart. This shows up on your fuel gauge as reduced mileage do to the fact that you need to give your engine more gas to do the same amount of “work”. A good example is that if your vehicle was rated for 28mpg in 1984 then it will probably get closer to 25mpg on current summer-blend gasoline…even lower on winter blend.

   My s10 beater from 84 with 4×4 5spd tranny, headers and extra oil capacity pulls 20-22 in the summer and 15-20 in the winter depending on air temp and wind…sad considering its a puny 2.8, but not bad considering its 26 years old and running on my generations inferior gasoline blends.

I have an 85, I am troubleshooting on so many things. 1st one side of the turn signals doesn’t shut off, wiper blades no longer move, poor poor gas mileage, probably due to oil on a sparkplug. radio shuts off if i turn it up too loud. (I suspect the ground is the problem. This truck belonged to my GPA and I don’t want to let die also. Love for the S-10 for life and him

8. Hey guys… I had a 2002 chevy s10 4×4 auto and it was the 4 door one. Top or the line… I was getting 12-14 city 19-21 highway… I sold it and now getting a 2001 chevy s10 2.2L 4 cylinder. So hopefully it will be better on gas!!!!

9. I am puzzled by the mileage stats for my 1991 S10 4×4 Chevy Blazer (manual trans) The mileage I have calculated 5x and still comes up at 33mpg highway. This is WAY above stats. As far as I know, my vehicle is all original, nothing added or enhanced. Bought from city 6 yrs ago. All stock. My husband’s rig (same exact vehicle, bought from city) calculates at 27mpg highway. What’s the difference?

10. @LS – Wow. You may be a more fuel-efficient driver than your husband, and might drive an easier daily route, but still … Those numbers are Huge!

    If possible, fill at the same service station, same pump, same way …

    1. Fill the Tank
    2. Write down the odometer reading
    3. Drive Drive Drive (use at least half a tank)
    4. Fill the Tank again.
    5. Write down the odometer reading again.
    6. Subtract the first odometer reading from the second, then divide it by the number of gallons in the second fill.

12. why does the 83 s10 2.2 get 30’s and 40’s mpg and the 94 s10 2.2 gets 23 and 29 mpg? Same motor huge difference in mpg?

13. 1984 gets 45 MPG, while 2004 gets 19 MPG?

    Proof that they CAN make high MPG vehicles (but don’t).

    Buy used till they get the picture!!!
