Scion Gas Mileage

.

Toyota’s Scion packs a whole lot of style into some seriously small packages, with good gas mileage ratings, to boot. Scion’s best gas mileage is produced by the xD, with highway gas mileage estimates in the low thirty mile per gallon (MPG) range.

The snappy Scion xD five-door hatchback is fitted with a 1.8 liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that produces 128 horsepower (HP) and 125 foot pounds of torque. The 2008 xD’s gas mileage figures crack the magic 30 MPG highway mark: 27 city / 33 highway MPG when equipped with the five-speed manual and 26 city / 32 highway MPG when fitted with the four-speed automatic transmission.

We spent a week test driving a Scion xD this past summer and walked away with a favorable impression of the little critter. Check out our Scion xD Review:

The sleek Scion tC coupe is fitted with a 2.4 liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that produces 161 HP and 162 foot pounds of torque. The tC’s gas mileage ratings squeak to the magic 30 MPG highway mark: 23 city / 30 highway with the five-speed manual overdrive and 23 city / 31 highway with the four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The tC weighs in at 2905 with the manual and 2970 with the automatic.

The smooth but chunky five-door Scion xB is fitted with a 2.4 liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that produces 158 HP (three horsepower less then the 2.4 liter found under the hood of the tC) and 162 foot pounds of torque. The 2008 xB’s gas mileage ratings fall short of the 30 MPG highway mark: 22 city / 28 highway with either the five-speed manual overdrive or four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. While the finger could be pointed at both weight and aerodynamics, it’s most likely the latter. The compact xB tips the scales at 3020 with the manual and 3086 with the automatic.

Where are the Scion diesels, you ask? Why in Europe, of course. Rumor has it that the Scion tC is based on the Toyota Avensis platform. In the UK, the Avensis can be delivered with a 2.0 or 2.2 liter common rail diesel that produces 126 HP and 221 foot pounds of torque or 176 HP and 295 foot pounds of torque, respectively … along with “smooth and responsive” acceleration and splendid mileage ratings.

Note: the EPA tweaked their testing procedure, starting with the 2008 model year, with the end result being that the 2008 MPG estimates are now lower than previous years. As always, YMMV.

Bought my daughter a Scion XA (one and only model year – ‘06) last year – gets better mileage than the new XD with lots of pick-up. Great car! Would definitely buy the new XD for me. Keep making them, Toyota!

I bought a Scion XA ‘06 in ‘07 and LOVED IT! roomie and GREAT milage. I filled it up once a week. Best car I”ve ever owned. Until it got stolen last night. Keep making these Toyota. Great great job. :D

My last tank on my Scion XD was 40.2mpg. Yes, 40.2! 9000 miles and never had less than 34 mpg. Not bad for a car with no arm rest.

We have a Xa 2005 and my wife consistently gets 31 – 32 mpgs. In town and on the highway.

I bought a 2005 XB, and have never gotten less than 35-36 MPG. Sometimes I’ve gotten 40. Love the 05; don’t like the 08.

I have a 2005 Scion xA and the gas mileage just keeps getting better with age! I now regularly get 40+ mpg on the highway and 30+ in town.

I just bought 05 xb manual in Aug 72k…I’m a commonsensedriver getting an easy 43 on hwy, while my heavy foot wife gets 32 in town…I will drive it till it stops. I don’t like the dead vision zones the 08 has and will probably go back to a Subaru…Have 93 imprezza getting 32mpr manual 232K

i have a 05′ xA and i love it so much.. the gas is amazing.. and the car is a perfect fit and size.. get about 40+- on the high ways and about 31 in town..

I leased a tC ‘automatic’ in 2005. The car is a hoot to drive and I used up the 45000mi allowance quickly. I leased a 2007 tC ‘automatic’ and again, the mileage thing. Toyota is GREAT to deal with, my payment went up ONLY $2/mo (NO out of pocket money)!! I’m BUYING a 2009 tC this month.

AWESOME car!!! LOVE the sporty looks and handling, practicality of the hatchback, glass roof and HUGE sunroof, auto up/down windows on BOTH doors, etc, etc. Mileage is consistant at 25/29city, 31/hwy. Other than crappy tires, NO problems with either.

I’ve had a 2005 tC for almost 4 years now and have been diligently keeping track of the mileage. I posted my results on my blog at – http://perendinate.com/2008/12/15/2005-scion-tc-actual-gas-mileage-dataanalysis/

I bought an 06′ Xb last week and it only gets 22 mpg… I love everything else about it but the gas mileage is terrible. I bought it from a Toyota dealership and they keep telling me nothing is wrong with it…Can anyone tell me why its getting such horrible gas milage? I want to keep it :(

#15 mpg-o-editor on 06.30.09 at 10:56 pm

@Misha – There are a number of variables that come into play. Here’s a start …

What is the distance of your average commute each way?
How much highway vs. city?
How much time do you spend in bumper-to-bumper traffic?
How fast do you generally drive on the highway?
How much time do you spend idling?
How heavy is your foot?

I have a 05 Scion xA… I love it so much, unfortunately I get very poor gas mileage! I get regular oil changes.. I also drive a lot. It is usually around 26-28 mpg. I do a lot of highway driving for work, and I live in the city. What is up with that?

#17 mpg-o-editor on 01.17.10 at 3:03 pm

@Carolyn – What’s your average highway speed? If you have cruise control, how often do you use it? Do you tend to change lanes and accelerate often? Are you carrying extra weight in the car? Are the tires inflated up to spec?

I, too, have a 2005 Scion Xa (automatic) and I get disappointing mileage. I just bought it after owning an Audi TT, 225 horsepower, very heavy car. On the highway I consistently got 36-37 mpg with it, if I drove at under 65 mph. With my Scion, driving exactly the same way, I get 34, at most. The car is tuned, all filters replaced, fuel induction has been cleaned, new tires, properly filled. I drive it with a light foot, trying to get the best mileage possible. Any thoughts?
