Gas Mileage FAQ

There are lots of ways to solve this gas crisis we're in ... but we can't wait for the government or the automakers . We have to get off our duffs and cure our personal gas crisis and let the rest of the world sort things out.

If you're spending hundreds of dollars a month on gasoline, take solace in the hope that there is a better way. We do not have to be beholden to imported oil and the whim of the market. By taking personal responsibility, we can plug the leaky dam ... one wallet at a time.

Don't Drive Like My Wife

Okay, so I might not score many points at home with this, but you know these are obvious:

  • Know your vehicle's actual miles per gallon (MPG). You can't compare apples to oranges without a scorecard. Not sure of your present vehicle's gas mileage? Jump over to What's My MPG?
  • Avoid jackrabbit starts. Ease away from the line, grasshopper. This isn't the NHRA Summernationals and you're not Shirley Muldowney. Think of an egg (not hard-boiled) between your right foot and the accelerator pedal.
  • Stop slamming on those brakes. Don't wait until you're ten feet from the rear bumper of the Pinto that's sitting at the stoplight. Take your foot off the gas, coast, and use the brakes gently. Like so many things in life, a little anticipation goes a long way.
  • Don't drive around like a chicken without a head. Plan your shopping and errands to drive the least possible miles at times when the road isn't clogged with traffic.
  • Do you really have to take the SUV? If you have two vehicles, leave the gas-sucking behemoth in the driveway. Take the car that gets better gas mileage whenever possible.
  • Check the air pressure in your tires. What's that? Your local service station has a sign advertising "free air" ... and you haven't taken advantage of that kind offer? Buy yourself a nice little tire pressure gauge and use it. Under-inflated tires waste gas and make your vehicle ride and handle like a sloppy walrus.
  • Change your air filter more often than once in blue moon. These things are relatively cheap and can get clogged up quickly if you drive in dusty conditions. A clogged air filter adversely effects gas mileage. Most folks with a sliver of mechanical aptitude can replace their own air filter. If you're lacking that sliver, get someone to do it for you.
  • And finally ... consider what it will take to ditch your gas guzzler, all together ... which brings us to ...
