The six-speed manual-equipped naturally aspirated Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper Coupe are the most fuel-efficient offerings in Mini’s 2012 line up. (Go ahead, say that three times fast … we dare ya …) Both are fitted with an inline four-cylinder engine displacing 1.6-liters and are rated at 29 city / 37 highway / 32 combined miles per gallon (MPG). The six-speed automatic versions of both are rated at 28 city / 36 highway / 31 combined MPG. We’ve tested a number of Minis over the years and have found that the company tends to rate on the conservative end of the scale. If you can force yourself to drive with a light foot, you should be able to easily exceed the official numbers.
We had the opportunity to drive the ultra-high-MPG Mini Cooper D years back and find it hard to believe that we still can’t buy a diesel-powered Mini here in the States.
