The seven-passenger all-wheel-drive (AWD) 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTEC is fitted with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 clean diesel engine, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission with two overdrive gears. The GL350 BlueTEC’s V6 produces 210 horsepower and 400 foot pounds of torque. The seven-speed driver-adaptive automatic can be manually shifted with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The official fuel economy estimates for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTEC are 17 city / 23 highway miles per gallon (MPG).

We travelled over five hundred miles in our handsome Barolo Red review unit and trounced the official mileage estimates, scoring an average of 30.4 MPG on the Interstate highway and 23.7 MPG combined.

The official estimates appear to be rather conservative, but one thing is clear … drive the clean diesel GL350 BlueTEC with a light foot and you will be amply rewarded.

Overall test period temperatures ranged from from the high thirties through the low seventies. Interstate highway testing temperatures were in the high sixties through low seventies. The test vehicle was delivered with just over 7200 miles on the odometer and was equipped with the standard 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, clad with 275/50R20 all-season run-flat tires.

Interstate Mileage Testing:
Cruise control set to 68 MPH, A/C off, heat off, windows up: 29.1 MPG
Cruise control off, target speed 60-72 MPH, A/C off, heat off, windows up: 31.7 MPG

The 2010 GL350 BlueTEC requires ultra-low-sulfur diesel or B5 bio diesel and is equipped with a 26.4 gallon fuel tank and 3.4 gallon reserve. This allows for an astounding amount of range … especially when driven with a light foot.

The turbo V6 doesn’t sound or smell like the diesels of yore. AdBlue, an urea-based fluid, is injected into the exhaust to reduce NOx levels. (Although some have complained about the added cost of AdBlue, we’d like to see the fluid provided free of charge, throughout the warranty period.)

While the clean diesel engine is both smooth and powerful, off the line performance bears testament to the GL350 BlueTEC’s 5,423 pound curb weight.

The GL350 keeps the driver informed with a center-mounted multifunction display that is navigated via steering wheel-mounted controls. The multifunction display allows the driver’s eyes to stay centered, as it delivers a wealth of data, including our favorite, the real-time fuel economy gauge. Driving with the real-time MPG gauge active encourages a fuel-efficient light-footed driving style.

In addition to fuel economy information, the multifunction display provides trip meters, range to empty, average fuel economy, average mile per hour, oil-check, and maintenance system displays, along with navigation cues, mobile phonebook, and audio information.

While many seven-seat SUVs can be truly ponderous to drive, not so the unibody GL350 BlueTEC. Mercedes-Benz engineering delivers ride and handling that’s superior to body-on-frame SUVs. The four-wheel AIRMATIC suspension allows the GL350’s ride height to be raised or lowered three inches to adapt to road conditions.

The GL350’s full-time 4MATIC four-wheel-drive uses an electronic traction system (4-ETS) to monitor each wheel individually. If a wheel loses traction, braking is applied to that wheel, while power is shifted to the wheel or wheels that have maintained traction.

The cabin is spacious, luxurious, and well-appointed, as one would expect.

While burl walnut trim is standard issue, leather seating surfaces are optional. A pair of sunroofs open the interior up to the great outdoors, although the rear sunroof is fixed.

The eight-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system features a 6.5-inch LCD display and the Mercedes-Benz COMAND interface. USB iPod support, navigation, and a back-up camera are standard, along with Bluetooth connectivity (with phonebook download). The USB interface and auxiliary input are located in the glovebox. iPod integration is properly done, with Artists, Albums, and Playlists accessible from the head unit.

Eight-way power adjustable front seats with three-level heating are standard, as is four-way pneumatic lumbar support in the driver’s seat. Front seat ventilation is optional. The dual-zone automatic climate control system includes a dust and pollen filter.

Our test unit was chock full of additional options, including: a wood/leather steering wheel, duel-screen rear seat entertainment, cashmere leather seating, and premium interior and exterior lighting packages. (At this price level, one might expect a full leather interior and high-end lighting as standard equipment.)

There are three twelve-volt outlets: one at the base of the dash, one at the back of the console, and one in the cargo area, where you’ll also find an 115-volt outlet.

The second row seating is spacious and comfortable with plenty of leg (39.5 inches), head (40.6 inches), and shoulder (58.9 inches) room. The third row can actually accommodate grownups, unlike too many seven-seaters. The process of getting in and out of the third row is simplified through easy-entry/easy-exit controls.

The cargo area allows for 14.3 cubic feet of storage with the third row seats up, 43.8 cubic feet with the third row down, and 83.8 cubic feet with both the second and third row seats folded flat. The third row seats fold flat with the push of a button.

Not enough space to haul your stuff? The GL350 BlueTEC has a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.

Worth Noting: Mercedes-Benz provides a four-year/50,000 mile warranty and a 24-hour roadside assistance program.

All-in-all, the clean-diesel-powered 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTEC proves that a full-size SUV can be both luxurious and fuel-efficient. If you’re energy conscious, with folks to haul and the financial means, the GL350 BlueTEC should be on your short list.

The 2010 Jeep Liberty is offered in two-wheel- and four-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations in three levels of trim: Sport, Renegade, and Limited. The Liberty is equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The V6 delivers 210 horsepower (HP) and 235 foot pounds of torque.

The EPA’s fuel economy estimates for the 4WD Jeep Liberty are 15 city / 21 highway miles per gallon (MPG).

We traveled roughly five hundred miles in our Bright Silver Metallic Liberty Sport review unit and squeaked past the official mileage estimates, scoring an average of 22.8 MPG on the Interstate highway and 18.5 MPG combined in winter temperatures and mixed conditions.

Overall test period temperatures ranged from the twenties through the thirties. Interstate highway testing temperatures were in the mid thirties. The test vehicle was equipped with the standard 16-inch aluminum wheels clad with 225/75R16 all season tires and was delivered with just under 3000 miles on the odometer. (The optional 18-inch Aluminum Wheel Group option includes 235/60R18 all season tires, along with a full-size spare.)

2010 Jeep Liberty – Interstate Mileage Testing:
Cruise control set to 68 MPH, A/C off, heat on, windows up: 22.3 MPG
Cruise control off, target speed 60-72 MPH, A/C off, heat on, windows up: 23.4 MPG

The 2010 Jeep Liberty is equipped with a 19.5 gallon fuel tank.

The 3.7-liter V6 has its work cut out for it off the line, with the 4WD Liberty tipping the scales at just under 4,300 pounds (4,290 pound curb weight).

A new Interactive Decel Fuel Shut Off (iDFSO) and basic ECO indicator help save a bit of fuel and encourage a light-footed driving style, although we’d recommend adding a real-time fuel economy gauge to gain the best advantage.

Jeep’s traditional Trail-Rated prowess is proven in extreme conditions. The Liberty is a well mannered SUV, with a tall design that provides excellent visibility. Command-Trac part-time 4WD is standard. Full-time Selec-Trac is optional. Hill-descent Control and Hill-start Assist are standard.

The Liberty Sport’s roomy and functional interior is devoid of gimmicks.

The standard six-speaker audio system includes SIRIUS satellite radio, plays MP3 CDs and includes an auxiliary input jack for digital music players. The optional eight-speaker Infinity audio system includes a 368-watt amplifier and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.

UConnect Bluetooth is optional in the Sport model and standard in the Limited. The Liberty provides two 12-volt power outlets: one at the base of the dash and one in the cargo area.

Heated seats are only available in the Limited edition.

Families of six footers take note. Rear seat headroom is excellent for taller passengers.

The Liberty was built to haul stuff. A button on the key fob provides quick access to the tailgate window. The cargo area is cavernous, with 25.2 cubic feet of storage with the rear seats up and 60.9 cubic feet with the 60/40 rear seats folded down. The front passenger seat folds flat to accommodate longer items.

The trailer-tow package provides a 5,000 pound towing capacity.

Our test unit was equipped with the following option packages:

28B Customer Preferred Option Package – the towing package includes a full-size spare, Class III receiver hitch, wiring harness and adapter, trailer sway control, and heavy duty engine cooling.

Skid Plate Group – includes tow hooks, transmission skid plate, fuel tank skid plate, transfer case skid plate, and front suspension skid plate.

Popular Equipment Group – includes deep tint glass, speed control, fog lamps, security alarm, side roof rails, temperature and compass gauge, 225/75R16 all season tires, and cargo compartment cover.

The 2010 Liberty can be equipped with a conventional sunroof or a jumbo-sized Sky Slider full length open roof that measures a whopping 33 inches by 60 inches, providing a unique open-air driving environment.

All-in-all, the 2010 Jeep Liberty delivers competent 4WD performance and an abundance of interior space in a rugged package. While fuel economy leaves much to be desired, we expect efficiency to rise as Jeep adopts the new Chrysler V6 in upcoming models. We also hold out hope for a return of a fuel-efficient diesel-engine Liberty, down the road.

It’s not surprising that the 2010 Cadillac SRX is decidedly European, as Cadillac’s compact crossover rides on the same platform as the Opel Antara. The SRX currently offers a choice between two V6 engines (turbocharged or naturally aspirated) with front-wheel-drive (FWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD). While its gas mileage results are middle-of-the-road, the crisply-designed SRX delivers all the style, comfort, and tech goodies you’d expect in a modern high-end Cadillac.

The 2010 Cadillac SRX is available in both FWD and AWD configurations, and can be fitted with a direct-injected 3.0-liter V6 or a turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 engine. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. The 3.0-liter engine produces 265 horsepower (HP) and 223 foot pounds of torque, while the turbocharged V6 delivers 300 HP and 295 foot pounds of torque.

The EPA’s fuel economy estimates for the 3.0-liter equipped FWD Cadillac SRX are 18 city / 25 highway miles per gallon (MPG). The AWD 3.0-liter SRX is rated at 17 city / 23 highway, while the turbocharged AWD SRX is rated at 15 / 21.

We rolled up well over five hundred miles on the odometer of our 3.0-liter Radiant Silver SRX FWD Premium review unit and met the official mileage estimates with an average of 25.3 MPG on the Interstate highway and 19.8 MPG combined in winter temperatures.

Overall test period temperatures ranged from the twenty through forty degree range. Interstate highway testing temperatures were in the high thirties. The test vehicle was equipped with 20-inch aluminum wheels (base wheel size is 18-inches) and delivered with just over 300 miles on the odometer. (Fuel efficiency may rise after the engine has run through a proper break in period.)

Interstate Mileage Testing:
Cruise control set to 68 MPH, A/C off, heat on, driver seat heated, windows up: 24.8 MPG
Cruise control off, target speed 60-72 MPH, A/C off, heat on, driver seat heated, windows up: 25.9 MPG

The direct-injected 3.0-liter V6 does an acceptable job off the line in FWD trim. The SRX is hefty, with a curb weight of 4224 pounds for the 3.0-liter FWD SRX and 4307 for the AWD SRX.

The 2010 SRX is to be commended for its pair of instantaneous fuel economy displays. As always, we recommend the conscientious use of an instant fuel-economy gauge to help develop a light-footed fuel-efficient driving technique.

In addition to the real-time fuel economy display, the 2010 SRX’s Driver’s Information Center displays current speed limit, navigation, tire pressure, oil life, average fuel economy, trip meter, and fuel range, among other data.

The SRX is equipped with a 21.0 gallon gas tank and is designed to run on regular unleaded fuel.

The SRX’s cabin is distinctive, comfortable, and packed with features for the driver and passengers alike. Our SRX Premium test unit was loaded up with all the goodies, starting with leather appointed seats with heated and ventilated front buckets. The 8-way power front seats provide power lumbar support and memory settings for the driver seat as well as for the outside mirrors. Passengers are treated with a heated and reclining 60/40 rear bench, three-zone heating and air-conditioning, and rear seat audio controls.

The optional rear seat entertainment system provides dual LCD screens with wireless headphones and remote control.

The SRX’s navigation system is housed in an 8-inch touch screen that rises dramatically from the dash. Backup and parking is a snap with a standard rear camera display and rear parking assist.

The ten-speaker XM Satellite-equipped Bose audio system provides auxiliary and USB inputs. A 40 GB internal hard drive provides plenty of on-board storage for digital music files. iPod support provides access to playlists from the dash and steering wheel controls. Bluetooth is standard and a year of On-Star service (with turn-by-turn navigation) is included, along with 90 days of XM Satellite radio.

The SRX is fitted with power outlets at the base of the dash, inside the center console, at the back of the console, and in the cargo area.

A power programmable liftgate is standard in the Premium model, along with remote keyless entry, adaptive remote start and adjustable pedals.

The SRX provides 61.1 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats down. While our test unit was equipped with the U-Rail system, the adjustable cargo fence was not available at the time of testing.

The SRX provides innovations not found in other small crossover SUVs. The Ultra-View sunroof provides a remarkable view of the sky, while the Adaptive Forward Lighting system follows the SRX’s steering around curves.

All-in-all, the five-passenger 2010 Cadillac SRX delivers distinctive style and a solid ride, along with plenty of creature comforts, conveniences and tech goodies. We look forward to future models that deliver a significant upgrade in fuel economy.

While the Opel Antara is offered with a fuel-efficient clean diesel engine in Europe, America will likely see a hybrid variant to compete with the Lexus 450h.

The 2010 GMC Terrain shares its platform with the Chevy Equinox, and like its cousin, delivers solid gas mileage results when equipped with the standard four-cylinder engine. The Terrain is a prime choice for fuel-conscious families swapping out of larger SUVs, with generous interior space, a comfortable ride, and plenty of in-cabin amenities.

The 2010 GMC Terrain is available in both front-wheel (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations, and can be fitted with a 2.4-liter inline four or 3.0-liter V6 engine. A six-speed automatic transmission is used exclusively. The four cylinder Ecotech engine produces 182 horsepower (HP) and 172 foot pounds of torque, while the V6 delivers 264 HP and 222 foot pounds of torque.

The EPA’s fuel economy estimates for the four-cylinder equipped FWD GMC Terrain are 22 city / 32 highway miles per gallon (MPG). The AWD Terrain is rated at 20 city / 29 highway MPG. The V6 Terrain is rated at 17 / 25 with FWD and 17 / 24 with AWD.

We logged roughly five hundred miles on the odometer of our four-cylinder-equipped Carbon Black Metallic AWD Terrain SLT-1 review unit and met the official mileage estimates with an average of 29.6 MPG on the Interstate highway and 24.9 MPG combined. Our results with the Terrain closely matched those with a similarly equipped AWD Chevy Equinox.

All fuel economy testing was performed in the Terrain’s “Eco” mode. Overall test period temperatures ranged from the high forties through the high sixties. Interstate highway testing temperatures were in the low sixty degree range. The test vehicle was delivered with less than 1000 miles on the odometer. (Fuel efficiency can rise a bit after the engine has run through a proper break in period.)

Interstate Mileage Testing:
Cruise control set to 68 MPH, A/C off, windows up: 28.5 MPG
Cruise control off, target speed 60-72 MPH, A/C off, windows up: 30.8 MPG

While the 2.4-liter inline four won’t set any records for performance off-the-line, it’s adequate for the AWD Terrain SLT-1’s 4,034 pound curb weight in most conditions. If towing is a consideration, potential owners should consider the more powerful 3.0-liter V6. The four-cylinder Terrain has a maximum trailer/towing capacity of 1500 pounds, while the V6 Terrain is rated at 3500 pounds.

The Terrain provides an instantaneous fuel economy display. We always recommend driving with the instant fuel-economy gauge active, to help develop a light-footed driving technique in the quest to achieve better gas mileage.

In addition to the real-time fuel economy display, the 2010 Terrain’s Driver’s Information Center provides tire pressure data, oil life, average fuel economy, two trip meters, and fuel range, among other statistics.

Four-cylinder Terrains are equipped with 18.0 gallon gas tanks, while V6 Terrains feature 20 gallon tanks. Both should provide excellent highway range. The Terrain is designed to run on regular unleaded fuel.

Like the 2010 Equinox, the Terrain is decidedly car-like as it delivers a comfortable and quiet ride. Exterior styling is the biggest differentiator for folks choosing between the Terrain and the Equinox.

The Terrain’s roomy interior is a strong point. Leather appointed seats with heated front buckets and an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support are standard in the SLT models.

Backup and parking duties are eased with a standard rear view mirror-based Rear Camera display that activates when the transmission is shifted into reverse.

The eight-speaker XM Satellite-equipped Pioneer audio system includes both auxiliary and USB inputs. iPod support provides access to playlists from the dash and steering wheel controls. Bluetooth is standard and a year of On-Star service is included, along with 90 days of XM Satellite radio. Remote keyless entry and vehicle start are both standard in the SLT models.

The Terrain has a slew of power outlets, with one at the base of the dash, one inside the center console, one at the back of the console, and one in the cargo area.

Passengers will appreciate the bounty of rear seat leg and headroom. The Terrain’s 60/40 split rear seat reclines, as well as sliding forward and backward to accommodate passengers and cargo. A power lift gate is optional on the SLT-1 and standard on the SLT-2. The Terrain tackles the shopping chores with abandon by providing 63.7 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats down.

All-in-all, the five-passenger 2010 GMC Terrain is an excellent alternative for folks moving from a conventional SUV. Like its cousin the Chevy Equinox, the Terrain provides a winning combination of ride, quiet, comfort, and fuel economy.

The four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4×4 is fitted with a 3.8-liter V6 engine that can be mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The Wrangler’s V6 produces 202 horsepower (HP) and 237 foot pounds of torque.

The EPA’s fuel economy estimates for the 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 are 15 city / 19 highway miles per gallon (MPG) with both the manual and automatic transmissions. (The 2WD Sport 4×2 and Sahara 4×2 are rated slightly higher, at 15/20)

We put more than five hundred miles on the odometer of our automatic-equipped Red Rock Crystal Pearl review unit over a range of terrain and were able to squeak past the official mileage estimates with an average of 22.1 MPG on the Interstate highway and 17.9 MPG combined.

Interstate Mileage Testing:
Cruise control set to 68 MPH, A/C off, windows up: 21.2 MPG
Cruise control off, target speed 60-72 MPH, A/C off, windows up: 23.1 MPG

Overall test period temperatures ranged from the mid-fifties through the low eighties, with Interstate highway testing temperatures in the sixties. Highway tests were performed with the removable top on the vehicle.

The Wrangler’s 3.8-liter engine runs on regular unleaded fuel. The 22.5 gallon capacity gas tank provides a good amount of range.

There’s no mistaking the Wrangler for a speed demon, as it takes a leisurely trot up to highway speeds.

We had the opportunity to run our test unit through a variety of conditions, including miles upon miles of sand roads crisscrossing Wharton State Forest in the heart of the Jersey Pinelands. We found the Wrangler Unlimited to be most at home when off the beaten path. While the highway ride is smooth, it can be a bit bouncy in-town.

Although the Wrangler includes an average fuel economy display as standard equipment, it lacks a real-time fuel economy gauge. We used an aftermarket AutoMeter EcoMeter throughout testing in order to achieve higher fuel efficiency through light-footed driving.

The Wrangler Unlimited rides on a 116-inch wheelbase that’s stretched 20.6-inches over the standard Wrangler. This allows for a generous amount of passenger room and cargo capacity. 46.4 cubic feet of cargo space is available when the 60/40 rear seats are up and a whopping 83 cubic feet of space is available when the rear seats are down. Underfloor storage provides additional space to store items away from prying eyes.

Rear seating is designed to accommodate three, with plenty of leg and headroom.

A subwoofer-equipped 368-watt 7-speaker Infinity sound system is standard in the Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. Our test unit was fitted with the optional Uconnect Navigation and audio system, which includes a 30 gigabyte hard disk drive (HDD) for music storage.

While there are both USB and audio input jacks, USB performance is limited. The system does not work directly with iPod menus and cannot play music downloaded from the iTunes Store unless converted to MP3 format (or run through the audio input jack). Music files can be downloaded to the HDD from USB devices or ripped from audio CDs.

The look may be retro, but the modern conveniences are covered. True to Jeep tradition, the doors are removable, even though they include power windows and locks. There are two power outlets at the base of the dash. While our test unit was not equipped with it, a Bluetooth option is available. Although we’ve gotten a bit lost in the Pinelands in previous outings, off-roading with a satellite navigation system on-board is like having a little bird on your shoulder.

Make no mistake about it … this is a serious four-wheeler, not a fashion accessory. Four wheel disc brakes, a Dana 44 heavy duty rear axle, skid plates (for the transfer case and fuel tank), Command-Trac Shift-on-the-fly 4WD, and Hill Assist are standard, along with two front two hooks and one rear tow hook. The Wrangler Unlimited rides on 18 x 7.5 inch machined cast aluminum wheels shod with P225/70R18 On-/Off-Road Tires. A full size spare is standard issue.

The Wrangler Unlimited comes standard with Jeep’s Sunrider soft top. We highly recommend adding a hard top. The optional three-piece modular Freedom hard top includes a rear window wiper/defroster and is reasonably priced. One person can easily remove or install the front sections of the Freedom top.

All-in-all, the Jeep Wranger Sahara Unlimited 4×4 continues to fill a unique niche by delivering dependable off-road performance, in-cabin technology, iconic design, and open air motoring, along with plenty of cargo capacity and passenger space. If you want to get there with four doors and an open roof, the Wrangler Unlimited is the only game in or out of town.

Curb Weight: 4,269 pounds – manual, 4,294 – automatic.
Final Assembly Point: Toledo, Ohio
Country of Origin: Engine – United States, Transmission – United States
U.S/Canadian Parts Content: 57%

Make no mistake about it. The 2009 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid is a great big truck that integrates some innovative technology. With room for eight and plenty of hauling power, the traditional Tahoe has been a popular choice for large active families. The new two-mode hybrid system provides considerable benefits in lower-speed operation – whether you’re cruising through town or crawling through the parking lot at the local sports complex.

The Tahoe Hybrid’s 6.0-liter V8 engine produces 332 horsepower (HP) and 367 foot pounds of torque. The big V8 is mated to a two-mode continuous electric ratio hybrid transmission with four fixed gears.

While the Tahoe is traditionally quite thirsty, the Hybrid version uses its 300 volts of energy storage and Active Fuel Management on the V8, to good effect. The official mileage estimates for the 2009 Tahoe Hybrid are 21 city / 22 highway miles per gallon (MPG) for the two-wheel-drive (2WD) version and 20/20 for the all-wheel-drive (4WD) version.

We put nearly 600 miles on our 4WD Blue Granite Metallic Tahoe Hybrid review unit and were able to squeak by the official estimates, with an average of 22.1 MPG on the Interstate highway and 22.5 MPG combined.

Overall test period temperatures ranged in the thirties through fifties, with freeway speeds between 60 and 72 miles per hour (MPH). Highway testing temperatures were in the forties.

4WD Tahoe Hybrid Highway MPG Testing
Cruise control on @ 68 MPH – 21.5 MPG
Cruise control off, target speed between 60-72 MPH – 22.7

Outside of the big front air dam and badges, most folks won’t know you’re driving a hybrid.

The Tahoe Hybrid will crawl under electric power at speeds under 30 miles per hour (MPH) or so, but you need to have a very light foot to take full advantage of the hybrid system. After a day or so of training yourself, you’ll be able to achieve the maximum MPGs from the vehicle.

You’ll use three information displays in your quest for maximum mileage. The first is the Economy gauge. It’ll swing to the right under acceleration, and back to center when you lift off the gas.

The Driver’s Information Center provides a host of data, including our favorite: Instant Fuel Economy. This is the tool you’ll use to fine-tune your driving style.

The Tahoe Hybrid will shut its gasoline engine off at a full stop. As you gently pull away from a stop, the Hybrid Power Flow display will show that you’re moving under electric power. As you gain speed and press harder on the accelerator pedal, the gasoline engine will kick in. (When you begin to experiment with this, make sure there’s no one behind you in traffic, lest you infuriate other drivers.)

Once you lighten up on the throttle, the V8 engine can kick down to just four cylinders via Active Fuel Management. It really pays to keep an eye on the Instant Fuel Economy display and use a light foot.

While the MPG numbers might not seem overwhelming, this is a big heavy (4WD: 5835 pounds/2WD: 5617 pounds) vehicle, and the Two-Mode Hybrid system represents a significant first step. We expect to see dramatic gains when Chevy adopts larger capacity Lithium Ion batteries, and plug-in technology.

We’ve just spent a week’s time with a 2009 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. When the big SUV crept out of the driveway for the last time earlier today, I was still trying to get my head around the target market. While the Tahoe Hybrid delivers significantly improved fuel economy over the conventional version, it does so at a price. At today’s lower gas prices, it would seem that the added cost of the hybrid drive train presents a roadblock to sales. But just hours after giving up the keys to our blue granite metallic test unit, I saw my first Tahoe Hybrid in the wild – and in our town, no less – while performing after-school family taxi duties.

A quick trip to eBay is an indicator of the current level of discounting. At least one dealer was slashing seven thousand dollars off the Tahoe Hybrid’s MSRP. Buyers can also expect another $2,200 off for the federal hybrid tax credit.

It can take a while to get accustomed to driving the Tahoe Hybrid. Stomping on the accelerator pedal from a standing start is an interesting experience, to say the least. In this video, the system is in Auto Stop mode, with the engine off, as it launches.

Over our week of testing, the 2-mode hybrid system switched flawlessly between modes. With a 300 watt battery pack, two sixty kilowatt electric motors, and active fuel management on the 6.0 liter V8, we had no problem exceeding the official estimates of 20 city / 20 highway. (While those numbers might not seem all that large, keep in mind that the 4WD Tahoe Hybrid weighs in at 5835 pounds.)

This MPGomatic exclusive segment from SEMA 2008 with Joel McGuire from GM provides a bit of detail on how the Tahoe’s 2-mode hybrid system works …

Getting the most out of the system can take some patience. We rolled through a good bit of tape this week and have some sifting to do, so it might take a day or two to post the video(s) for our full Tahoe Hybrid review. Stay tuned!

While the hybrid SUV phenomena can’t match the combination of peanut butter and chocolate for pure popularity, the blending of truck-based people-mover and electric propulsion technology has produced a notable oxymoron.

Justly or not, SUVs are frequently cast as the poster boy for conspicuous consumption. You won’t find the conventional press or hordes of lemmings (any similarities are purely coincidental) praising the vast majority of SUVs for their fuel-stinginess. Yet the Ford Escape Hybrid SUV achieves quite remarkable gas mileage in city settings. (We were able to hit the magic 40 MPG mark in-town in our Escape Hybrid review.) This unique quality has led the Escape Hybrid to sell out its production runs, year-after-year.

Earlier this week, Ford announced a notable milestone: the 100,000th Escape Hybrid has rolled off the line at the Kansas City Assembly Plant. With production constraints due to battery availability, 100,000 vehicles in a relatively short time frame is significant. It’s clear that many Americans aren’t keen on giving up their SUVs and the Escape Hybrid fills an important niche.

The economic climate and drop in the price of gasoline have not been kind to the market, and there’s little to trumpet on this front on the other side of town. With Chrysler putting a hold on production of the Chrysler Aspen Hybrid and Dodge Durango Hybrid late last year, the twins have earned the distinction of being the first hybrid SUVs to be put on hold … two canaries in the coal mine. The market has further delayed the introduction of GM’s next-generation Saturn VUE Two-Mode Hybrid.

Nevertheless, there are seven hybrid SUVs available in America today. Over the last twelve months, we’ve had the good fortune to have opportunity to review four of the hybrid SUVs currently on sale:

Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid

Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

Ford Escape Hybrid

Lexus RX400h Hybrid

Mercury Mariner Hybrid

Saturn VUE Green Line Hybrid

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

While we generally prefer smaller vehicles, we’re looking forward to putting the Tahoe Hybrid to a week-long road test this month with excursions for building materials and bulk goods that would overwhelm a smaller SUV.

Hybrid technology will likely have a place in a greater number of SUVs, going forward, but it is not the be-all, end-all. With the introduction of the Audi Q7 TDI and BMW X5d, America is getting its first look at the power and fuel efficiency of clean diesel engines. While these two technologies may ultimately blend, it will not in all likelihood, happen first (if at all) with a domestic American manufacturer … unless the partnership between Chrysler and Fiat quickly bears fruit.

All 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander ES and SE models are equipped with a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine, producing 168 horsepower (HP) and 167 foot-pounds of torque. The more sporting Outlander XLS is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6, producing 220 HP and 204 foot-pounds of torque. The 2.0-liter is fitted with a CVT, while the 3.0-liter V6 earns a well-suited six-speed automatic transmission.

The official mileage estimates for the V6 AWD 2009 Outlander XLS are 17 city / 23 highway miles per gallon (MPG).

We put over 400 miles on the odometer of our V6-equipped Outlander XLS review unit, sneaking past the official estimates, scoring an average of 25.5 MPG on the Interstate highway, with 22.1 MPG combined.

All mileage tests were performed with the drive mode selector in 2WD. Test period temperatures ranged from the twenties through the forties, with freeway speeds between 60 and 72 miles per hour (MPH).

68 MPH with cruise – 24.3 MPG
60-72 MPH without cruise – 26.7 MPG

The Outlander XLS’s V6 and Sportronic six-speed transmission proved themselves to be a worthy combination. While the Outlander’s admittedly a bit removed from the venerable Mitsubishi EVO, the column-mounted magnesium paddle shifters manage to turn that everyday drive into more fun than a XBox 360.

Okay, so you might not give up playing Gran Turismo. Although the Outlander can’t compare to an EVO, its handling beats the typical marshmallow SUV’s handling, hands down. And you can always bring your xBox or Playstation along with and plug it into the video input ports that come with the Navigation option package.

The optional Mitsubishi Multi Communication System adds a whole new dimension with advanced fuel economy tracking, an altimeter, a barometer, a rearview camera, and a 40 GB hard drive-equipped music server. Alas, all is not golden. While there’s an auxiliary audio input hidden about the cabin, a much sought-after USB hookup is nowhere to be found. You’ll need to move music to the system’s hard drive via CDs. (The system provides in-car track ripping.)

There are three 12-volt outlets: one at the base of the dash, one in the center console, and one in the rear cargo area. A 115-volt AC outlet can be found in the console, as well.

The Outlander’s standard issue Multi-Information display is located center-stage, between the tachometer and speedometer. With average fuel economy and instant MPG displays, the LED screen provides the feedback you need to get the maximum mileage out of the Outlander.

MPG Tips: When driven conscientiously, the six-speed automatic Outlander can beat the numbers. The trick, as always, is to drive with a light foot and let off the throttle whenever possible. Shift early and keep the real-time MPG thermometer as high as you can, for as long as you can. Use inertia to its greatest advantage, but keep in mind that you’re in a SUV, not a sports car.

The Outlander XLS features a crisply-designed, driver-focused interior, with comprehensive steering wheel controls. The luxury package include leather seating and heated front buckets, although lumbar support is notably absent.

Selectable four-wheel-drive allows the driver to dial down to front wheel drive to save on fuel or up to four wheel lock for the rough stuff.

The split rear tailgate provides excellent access to the Outlander’s 72.6 cubic feet of cargo space. And last but not least, the optional 650 watt Rockford Fosgate audio system delivers plenty of thump to rattle the mirrors with a 10-inch subwoofer.

All-in-all, the sporty Outlander XLS offers a unique and fun-to-drive alternative to the more mundane competition.

Note: The 3.0-liter SOHC MIVEC V6 qualifies as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV).

MPG-o-Matic CX-7 Review Summary: . The AWD Mazda CX-7 stands apart from the flock of five-seat crossovers, with a truly sporting approach and a distinctive design. No question about it … this is the driver’s CUV.

The sporty 2009 Mazda CX-7 is available in both all-wheel- (AWD) and front-wheel-drive (FWD) configurations, with three levels of trim: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.

The CX-7 is equipped with a 2.3 liter Direct-Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The turbo four produces 244 horsepower (HP) and 258 foot pounds of torque.

The official gas mileage estimates for the 2009 Mazda CX-7 are 17 city / 23 highway miles per gallon (MPG) for the FWD version and 16/22 for the AWD version.

We slipped past the official estimates for our True Silver Metallic Grand Touring AWD 2009 Mazda CX-7 review unit, scoring an average of 24.1 MPG on the Interstate highway, with 19.8 MPG combined. Test period temperatures ranged from the twenties through thirties, with freeway speeds between 60 and 72 miles per hour (MPH).

While the four banger’s a bit soft off the line, the fun starts once it starts to spin up, with redline coming at 6700 revolutions per minute (RPM).

The six-speed sport shift automatic is a big plus for both fuel economy and sheer fun. The transmission reacts particularly well to a light footed driving style.

The CX-7 is unquestionably one of the best handling crossovers on the road today. Unlike too many competitors, Mazda’s sporting crossover is the furthest thing from a lumbering marshmallow.

We had the chance to put the CX-7 GT to the test on the backroads and in the snow. It performed well under all conditions.

While there’s no mistaking the CX-7 for a full-on SUV, our test unit was equipped with the optional front and rear underguard package.

The CX-7 GT is clearly built for the driver, from the leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel and shifter to the supportive leather seats (with their snappy faux croc-inset). Single setting front heated seats, dual 12-volt outlets, and a console mounted audio input jack keep you toasty warm, with the tunes rolling, while seering wheel mounted audio and Bluetooth controls keep your hands on the wheel.

While pricey, the Technology option package provides a 240W Bose 9-speaker touch screen audio system with voice navigation and satellite radio, integrated with a tricky six-disc flip-front cd-changer. A handy rearview camera and power moonroof complete the package.

The CX-7 fails to provide either a real-time or average fuel economy display. While the lack of a MPG gauge is easily remedied with an aftermarket display unit, we hope that Mazda will choose to include a factory-standard MPG gauge in the 2010 models.

Our highest highway mileage results were achieved with the CX-7’s cruise control turned off. We were able to score the best numbers with a watchful eye on our ScanGaugeII, and a light touch on the accelerator. The CX-7’s six-speed automatic transmission adds a great deal of thrift when lifting off the throttle, by dropping revs down to near idle speed.

As we always say, getting the best mileage is all about knowing when to let off. The greater the distance you drive with your foot completely off the pedal, the higher your MPGs.

All-in-all, we found the AWD CX-7 GT to be an intriguingly designed alternative to the typical five seat SUV or crossover. With a responsive throttle and solid handling, we thoroughly enjoyed putting the CX-7 through its paces.

Fuel requirements: Although Regular-grade gasoline is acceptable, Premium is recommended

Government Safety Ratings: The Mazda CX-7 is rated five stars for frontal crash (driver & passenger) and side crash (front & rear seat), and four starts for rollover.

Assembly/Parts Content: The Mazda CX-7 is assembled in Hiroshima, Japan. Both the engine and transmission are of Japanese origin. U.S./Canadian parts content: 0%.
