I live in Germany and drive my US spec. 2009 335d on the autobahn. I get 41 mpg driving at average speeds of 100 mph. I get average in and around mileage of 34 mpg. The description of perfect balance of power and efficiency suits this car well.

I traded my 2003 Dinan S2 M5 for a new 335d in July (and I only mention that to highlight my love of high horsepower and fast driving.) I routinely drive 75 to 85 on the highway in my 335d and almost always achieve 40+ mpg. Last weekend drove 240 miles to Charleston, SC at 85 to 95 MPH - still got 38+ mpg!

@Dan - It would be cool to provide 75-80MPH highway fuel economy data… but I need to maintain my driver's license. :)

As far as what the folks as AutoBlog say... It all depends. There are lots of variables when it comes to fuel economy testing. We've seen some interesting stuff, week after week. Some estimates are relatively accurate, others are overly conservative... But it all comes down to the driver and the specific conditions.

Excellent review. I would love to know how it does at 80 mph. This is the typical speed for the South and West.

The guys at Autoblog's Podcast do say that hybrids almost always underperform on mpg results, and that diesels almost always perform much better than their EPA estimates. Do you find this to be true?
