You've said the Tacoma is known outside the US as the Hilux. They are indeed similar in size but they are not the same vehicle. The Tacoma was designed from the ground up for the North American market where it was felt the Hilux was too agrarian to compete.

It's too bad that the Toyota Tacoma will never get the 3.0 Liter Diesel I-4 Engine that's in the Toyota HiLux at all. Both the Toyota Tacoma and the Toyota Hilux come in gasoline Engines in both 2.7 Liter I-4 and 4.0 Liter V-6 Engines. Toyota Tacoma in the US and Toyota Hilux in Australia. I know that the emission standards are very strict when it comes to Diesel Engines and it's too bad that the Toyota Hilux 3.0 I-4 Diesel will never get into the US at all and Toyota in the US is still behind in Diesel Engine Technology. Toyota in Austalia is ahead of the US in Diesel Technology and that to me is a very big disappointment.
