The Ford Escape was introduced in 2001 as Ford’s entry into the two-row mid-size SUV segment. It was designed in conjunction with Mazda, and shares many components with the Mazda Tribute, as well as with the Mercury Mariner.

The 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid (shown above) is the most fuel efficient SUV sold in the United States, with the front wheel drive version delivering 34 city and 30 highway miles per gallon, while the four wheel drive version hauls down 29 city and 27 highway. The non-hybrid Escape is available with either a 2.4 liter four cylinder or a 3.0 liter six.
We spent a week test driving the Ford Escape Hybrid and were amazed at how great the gas mileage is in the city and at lower speeds. Check out our Ford Escape Hybrid review:

I’m very pleased with my Escape Hybrid (2008 model). Despite living on a gravel road in snow country, I’m getting around 28 mpg (overall) in winter, and 32 in summer — with 4WD! And that’s with liberal use of heated seats and such in the winter, too. I’m surprised mileage isn’t more, considering the light weight and small engine, but it’s a great start.
my 2006 ford escape 4 cylinder only gets 14mpg. whats the problem
My 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid only gets 22 MPG. Whats wrong
Vince, Pete -
How long have you owned your Escape?
Over that time, has gas mileage decreased slowly or rapidly?
When was it last serviced at a Ford dealership? Was gas mileage an issue at that time?
What is your typical driving routine like?
For Pete: Does your Escape have sufficient time to warm up (while driving) to enable hybrid mode?
How heavy are you on the throttle?
2007 escape all wheel drive v6 auto. I have always gotten 21.5 with this car. I started to get worse miliage at about 67 thousand miles. I got tune up, it did not help. Am getting 16.5 17.5 now. What can I do. What is the problem. Thanks
Don’t assume that your dashboard reported MPG is correct.
I have a 2008 Escape, 6cyl, 4WD. I do almost exclusively local driving, with a little highway and I get about 17mpg. I calculate my mpg by filling the tank, driving till almost empty, then refilling at the same pump to get the actual number of gallons used. Then divide miles between fillup by gallons. The dashboard calculated mpg over the same time span is always about 0.7 mpg higher than reality!
Did Ford purposely set the onboard computer to miscalculate this to make you think you are getting better mileage? Sure 0.7 is within a reasonable tolerance for error.
I think that those Ford engineers could make it to within 0.1 if the suits above them in Detroit would let them.
What do you think?
I just got a 2011 Escape fwd 4 cyl and It is saying 15.8 mpg?! This is SO upsetting because I bought this car because of the good gas mileage. Has anyone else had this problem and as disappointed as me?
I bought a used 2008 XLT 3.0 with around 80,000 on it. After reading all the reviews on the gas mileage of these vehicles, I think there is something wrong with mine. I have not had any problems or complaints about it except for the fact that I’m only getting around 13 MPG. I do not have a computer that calculates it for me. I just reset the trip odometer at a fill up and watched me only get 50 miles per quarter tank. I’ve changed the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, oil, used sea foam in the gas, oil, and vacume line to the cylinders and most recently replaced the DPFE sensor with no positive results. For it to be 13, there HAS to be something wrong…….. any ideas or advice?
before I made the tune up it was at 12 mpg , now is t 13.3 but also I removed all heavy stuff ( tool box, hydraulic jack, etc) what else can I do to increase MPG ??
I just bought a 2012 Ford Escape 4-cylinder which is rated at 20 mpg city and 27 mpg hwy. I just drove it home and got 14.5 mpg. I am furious and feel like I have been duped by the Ford Motor company and the dealer. I know how to drive vehicles to enhance mpg because I also own a Prius. Is there anything I can do? It has been less than 24 hours since I signed the contract.
@Paula – Some things to consider ….
1) How many miles are on the odometer? (Every vehicle needs to go through a break-in period.)
2) Are you measuring the fuel efficiency with the built-in display or via a tank fill? Did you reset the average fuel economy display before you left the dealers lot?
3) What were the road conditions on your trip home from the dealer? How many miles did you travel? Was traffic light/medium/heavy?
4) Did you spend any significant time idling?
I rented a Ford Escape in Florida for a week recently and the gas mileage was horrible. I did have the air conditioning on all the time so I understand burning a little more gas. But I was filling up everyday. I have owned a Ford Explorer for fourteen years. And while it’s not great on gas because it’s heavier, it was nowhere as bad as the lighter Escape.
I purchased a used 2009 Escape Hybrid in March 2012. After driving it through the summer–both locally and on a couple of longer highway trips–the gas mileage was showing 31.2. I’ve been noticing it dropping more and more this fall. It’s now at 27.1. Is that because they are less efficient in the cold weather? Should I be concerned and/or have it looked at?
Jo – Hybrids are definitely less efficient in colder weather. This is most evident when your regular driving pattern includes a lot of short trips. The drive train won’t kick into hybrid mode until the engine is fully warmed up. Winter fuel will deliver fewer MPGs, as well, due to its formulation. Keep an eye on it … Spring can’t come soon enough!
Thank you for the info. I will hope that mpg improves in the spring.
